I think I saw my first (semi) wild prairie dogs the other day. They were not chipmunks and even more assuredly not squirrels. I mentioned them to callicrates and he had seen them as well, or at least one of them. We both saw them in the same exit from I-40, which I now fervently hope will not be paved over as many of the other former dirt patches have been.

Anyway, Andy said they looked like a cross between chipmunks and ferrets, ay least size-wise. They were a bit stocky and very cute; all brown as far as I could see. They are definitely not anything I encountered while growing up in the northeast. If they are prairie dogs, then they are the second native animals we've seen. The first were roadrunners.
